Kamilla McKay
My name is Kamilla McKay and I am a Creatrix! My philosophy is there is always something new to learn or perspective to find. I grew up always trying new things and experimenting with different interests. I loved being active in sports but eventually found my footing in the arts. I spent the majority of my childhood on stage, whether it be dancing, singing or acting. I loved to perform and challenge my comfort zones.
In high school, I was unsure of my career path, so I pursued academics to cover my bases and found an interest in anatomy and social sciences. I kept my artistic flame alive in my free time through musical theatre, competitive dance, being in a band and practicing digital illustration. I realized my love for creativity upon graduation and made the last-minute switch from Criminology to Graphic Design, which I believe to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Although I had never taken a visual arts class and had no experience in the area of Graphic Design, I instantly fell in love with designing and the concept of solving problems with visual creativity. I took Psychology and Sociology as electives and found them beneficial in understanding humans as visual, interactive creatures and the relationship between the mind and our surrounding environment. My experiences and education have taught me the value of simply learning. Challenging yourself and looking for alternative perspectives is crucial to growing and connecting with the world around you.
Part of my education here at Canadore College was developing a brand for myself. I have begun to develop Kaleidoscope Graphics, a potential design agency that values learning and perspective as much as I do. Depending on how you twist and point a kaleidoscope, the pattern changes. The design world twists and visuals change with trends and the times, and so should designers. A kaleidoscope uses mirrors to reflect images, comparative to the way designs reflect off culture and are perceived differently by people depending on their perspective. The kaleidoscope represents adaptability, creativity and perspective. Every designer should embody these values, as does Kaleidoscope Graphics. The logo embodies a kaleidoscope with sharp edges and bold colours to display the brand’s confidence, as well as other core values, adaptability and perspective in a playful way.
As a self-proclaimed Creatrix, I value perpetual learning and an open mindset. Constantly in a state of transition, I try to embody creativity, adaptability and confidence.
